This is a short and concise FAQ summarizing the most common questions. At the end of the FAQ there is a download link to the full version.
What is Aurora?
Aurora is a new 500W HF transceiver from FlexRadio covering 160–10m (200W on 6m). Unlike traditional setups consisting of separate components—a transceiver, linear amplifier, and power supply—Aurora uses highly efficient Polar Modulation to generate standard SSB, CW, FT8, and other digital signals. This approach enables high efficiency, reducing heat and size compared to legacy systems—marking a major technical advancement.
Its fully integrated design includes a 3:1 ATU, minimizing cabling, RFI, and setup complexity while saving space and weight—ideal for both home and portable use. Built on the FLEX-6000/8000 architecture and compatible with SmartSDR, Aurora represents the most significant leap in amateur RF technology in the last 50 years.
I understand that Aurora is around 80 % efficient?
A 100 W transmitter at 40 % efficiency generates 150 W of heat, while at 80 %, it produces just 25 W. That’s a 6× reduction—allowing Aurora to deliver 500 W in a compact form factor.
Aurora’s efficient design eliminates the need for large heat sinks typical of legacy amplifiers.
Why is the Aurora transmitter so efficient?
The Polar Explorer™ transmitter uses switch-mode (Class D) amplifiers and DSP-based Polar Modulation—separating envelope and phase—to operate much more efficiently than traditional linear designs.
What is the difference between an Aurora AU‑510 and AU‑520 model?
AU‑510: Based on FLEX‑8400 + ATU, with 1 SCU, 4 antennas (2 that can output 500 W), and 2 receivers on one antenna.
AU‑520: Based on FLEX‑8600, with 2 SCUs, competition-grade preselectors, 6 antennas (2 that can output 500 W), and 4 receivers on two antennas.
What supply voltage is required for Aurora?
Aurora operates on 100–240 VAC via its auto-sensing built-in power supply—delivering full output even on standard 120 VAC. It can not operate from 13.8 V DC.
Do Aurora radios support SmartLink, multiFLEX, Adaptive Pre-distortion (SmartSignal) etc?
Yes — all Aurora models include the full FLEX‑8000 feature set. The AU‑510 mirrors a FLEX‑8400 with a 500 W Aurora transmitter, while the AU‑520 aligns with FLEX‑8600 specs.
Is the Aurora radio compatible with digital modes like FT8 and RTTY?
Yes!
Always monitor temperature and follow the manufacturer’s duty-cycle recommendations. FlexRadio have tested 100% transmission for a continuous 2 hours. While we do not recommend doing that, we are confident in how robust this transceiver is.
The Aurora transceivers are rated for Intermittent Commercial and Amateur Service (ICAS), which is 25-50% duty cycle.
Can I integrate the Aurora radio into a remote station setup?
Absolutely — Aurora models are built on the same amazing remote platform that all FLEX-8000 series radios are built on. The same API, with extensions for Aurora, is available as well as SmartLink capabilities. Aurora is the perfect high-power remote HF hardware.
Does Aurora support transverters?
Yes, transverters can be attached to the XVTR ports in the same fashion as the FLEX-6000 and FLEX-8000 series.
Can I operate Aurora outside the Amateur Radio bands for MARS, SHARES, etc?
No. This transmitter is designed strictly for the amateur bands and the hardware is not capable of transmission outside of normal amateur HF/6m bands.
What would the Aurora buy me if I already have a radio at home?
Upgrading from a 100 W radio gives you 500 W output with Aurora—and at 80 % efficiency, your power usage and heat are significantly lower. Integrated design also improves station simplicity and space. All to a lower price than buying the radio, amplifier and PSU separately.
