Paradar Lightning arrestor, N-type, 10kA

Ever wondered about the effect of a nearby lightning strike on your expensive RF equipment or Helium miner? The Paradar lightning arrestor is designed to protect your equipment, and your house, by diverting the power from a nearby strike away from sensitive equipment and into the ground. It’s rated for 10kA pulses up to 20µs in length.

Lightning arrestors also perform another import task: bleeding away DC voltages that accumulate in an antenna over time, particularly on stormy days. High potentials in clouds above induce similar potentials in your antenna below, and without an outlet these will build over time and cause premature failure of the attached radio.

A lightning arrestor will activate once these voltages reach a threshold level, and safely bleed them away. This can significantly prolong your radio’s life!

Lightning arrestors are not designed to handle the effects of a direct lightning strike – they protect only against nearby strikes, and bleed off accumulated charge.

Do not connect the lightning arrestor to your building’s earth wiring, because you risk providing an easy path for lightning to enter the wiring of your house and start a fire. Instead, run a separate cable from the lightning arrestor directly down to an earth rod. See the installation notes below.

Installation notes

• Screw the lightning arrestor directly to the end of the antenna as shown in the photos.
• Seal all joints with self-amalgamating tape.
• The ground lug on the lightning arrestor should be attached to a heavy-duty earth wire run down the outside of the building. Do not bring it inside, or attach it to your building earth wiring.
• Recommended earth wire size – 16 mm²  or AWG #5/6
• Connect the earth wire to a dedicated copper ground rod.
• Ensure there is no direct connection between the lightning arrestor and your household earth wiring.
