This week, on July 1st we received the first shipment of the long-awaited TX-500 transceiver from Lab599, and we started shipping preorders the day after, on July 2nd.

Jaan SM0OEK was the 1st EU customer to preorder a TX-500, he was therefor invited to the Pileup offices to pick it up in person. Jaan is a dedicated portable operator, and you will hear him activate various SM mountain tops with his new TX-500 this summer.

Sales of the TX-500 continue to be on a preorder basis for at least another two to three months as we continue to fill remaining preorders. The second production batch is expected to be delivered in August, the third at the end of September. If you preorder your TX-500 today delivery is expected in late October early November.

On behalf of our staff and the hard-working people at Lab599 we like to thank our preorder customers for your patience during the certification process and your support by pre-ordering this new and exciting transceiver!

We are happy to announce that the long process with CE certification of the TX-500 transceiver from Lab599 has finally been completed. This week the notified body contracted to do testing and evaluation issued their certificate proving that the TX-500 meets the requirements to be sold on the EU market.

Now the next step is to complete the necessary documentation and marking including CE labelling of the radio itself and its packaging. Meanwhile the production of the first batch of transceivers for the EU market is ongoing and estimated to be completed in middle of June. If everything goes according to plan we should be able to start fill first batch preorders sometime during the end of June or beginning of July.

If you are in the first batch of deliveries and have not prepaid your TX-500 we will shortly contact you with payment information.

Spring is coming to EU and many of us want to get out and operate the bands off grid. The Discovery TX-500 Adventure HF Transceiver from Lab599 will be the perfect companion on the islands, in the parks and on the hill tops for many off grid operators. It is built by outdoor and expedition enthusiasts to be taken to places never possible before.

Latest Preorder Update

The latest news about the CE certification process is that the TX-500 has undergone the testing required by a certified lab and the results are now being reviewed and verified by a “Notified Body” authorised to issue the certificates needed for CE marking. The timeline provided by the notified body to complete this task is around 3-4 weeks. This means that sometime in the second half of may we expect to have the TX-500 CE marked.

While waiting for the CE certification process to to be completed Lab599 has planned and started production in April of the first batch of transceivers for the EU market. Lab599 told us this week that they expect the first shipment will coincide with the receipt of the certificate, approximately at the end of May.

Being conservative we are therefore updating our delivery date of first batch preorders to June 15 and will start collecting pending payments in a few weeks. Another two batches to fill preorders will follow as soon as possible, but we have not received delivery confirmation on these yet.

We said it many times, once you receive your shipment and hold the TX-500 in your hand for the first time, we are certain you will agree – it has been worth waiting for! But don’t take our word for it, read the first user reviews at eham.net! There is a link at the end of this page.

Lab599 is getting closer to finalize the CE certification process of the TX-500 transceiver. After long delays, mainly due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the certification process is now moving forward and testing is underway. The certification institute and the lab has planned to complete testing sometime in the first half of March, then the certification paperwork should be rather swiftly provided.

TX-500 Delivery Schedule Update

Lab599 has ramped up production capacity and are prepared to manufacture the first batch of CE certified units by the end of March. Batch two and three will follow rather quickly but we still wait confirmation on more exact delivery dates for those dates. Still the pandemic affects availability and delivery of material and components.

Our aim is to deliver to the first batch of pre-ordered TX-500 to customers in April. The first batch is fully sold out and there are only a few units available in the second batch. Demand is very high for the TX-500, so it is a good idea to pre-order your TX-500 now.

We expect to start taking pre-orders for the third batch in a few days, the delivery date will therefore change to May 30 on our website. Our goal is to have TX-500 in stock for immediate delivery this summer. We will also raise the price of the TX-500 to EUR 940.00 from March 1. This price increase equal to the increase in our purchase price and a direct result of higher production costs due to the current situation. Please note that this increase does only applies to new orders placed March 1 or later. Orders placed at the latest on February 28 are not affected by the increase.

TX-500 New Features

We said it before and its worth repeating; Its worth waiting for this fantastic transceiver. When we received the first production demo units of TX-500 we were impressed with the build quality and functionality that was 100% already from start. Even so, during this lengthy process to obtain CE certification the Lab599 team has improved the TX-500 in several ways, here are a few examples of firmware upgrades;

Added SSB audio recorder/playback functionality

Extended 60m band

Perfected CW Keyer Iambic mode

Improved CAT control with WSJT-X

CW memory Keyer

Display contrast adjustment

TX-500 Battery Pack in Development

Lab599 developers are also working on a battery pack for the TX-500. Contrary to most other battery packs Lab599 takes a different approach by providing a case for standard sized cells. You then provide the batteries which makes this pack recyclable for a long time by just replacing failing cells with new ones.

Recyclable battery case – You provide standard battery cells

Standard universal power jack DC 5.5 x 2.5mm for charging

Input voltage from 12 to 35V

Connection to the transceiver via a service magnetic connector

Charge level indication

Replaceable fuse

Case function as an additional

Full-fledged stand with sturdy folding legs

Please note that the battery pack is still under development and that there is not a scheduled delivery time yet. Lab599 is focused on serving pre-order customers with their TX-500 first.

Download the updated TX-500 manual here.

Pileup is the exclusive EU dealership for Lab599 products and we work hard to deliver the TX-500 transceiver in time for summer’s portable fun and off grid adventures. If you haven’t done it yet, it is time to place your pre-order now!

Mats Strandberg RM2D recently purchased the Discovery TX-500 from Lab599 to get a durable transceiver for portable operations. In this blog post Mats share his experience of this ultra-compact HF adventure transceiver from a recent WWFF activity and why he prefer the TX-500 over his KX3 in the field.

RM2D, over to you:
The TX-500 was of course mainly purchased to be a durable radio for usage in portable operations like WWFF, SOTA and similar activities. As I already have a KX-3 and know that this radio is excellent both as a fixed radio at home, I was curious to see of I could find an even better radio for the field operations. I was ready to compromise with some of the obvious bells and whistles that the KX-3 has (true dual receivers, QSK). The TX-500, at least in this first version, lacks QSK, but it has a very fast setting for Semi-Break In. I don’t feel I need to have more than two VFOs and rarely would find the need to operate with two independent receivers in the forest or on a mountain top. Therefore the TX-500 has basically all I need for these type of operating conditions. It is lighter and also clearly more field operations adapted compared with KX-3. And the price difference is also quite considerable.

Today, Dec 5th, I decided to try the TX-500 out in a portable environment. I drove to one of the closest WWFF (RFF) references, walked 2 kilometer, carrying the radio, a 10 Ah LiFePO4 accumulator, headphones, UR5CDX CW-paddles, a DX-Wire 9.5 meter telescopic glass fibre pole and a wire vertical for 20 meters with 3 resonant elevated radials. This along with a portable camping table and a small camping chair. No issues at all to carry that stuff on my own.

The radio and the antenna was installed in approximately 45 minutes and I was excited to see what the feeling was being in a completely undisturbed radio environment. I worked SM5CBN as first contact on 14045, and remained on that frequency for a little less than 2 hours, with shorter breaks to somehow heat up the fingers that got a bit stiff in the minus 4 C temperature.

I used 200 Hz filter initially and when the pile got stronger I reduced to 100 Hz, that made life even easier. The filters (300, 200, 100 and 50 Hz) are extremely sharp and pleasant to use.

So, after 62 CW contacts with the TX-500, I agreed with myself that this will be MY portable radio and the KX-3 will remain as an excellent second radio to my TS590S in contests. If I would go on a holiday style DX expedition, I think I would no longer use my TS 590, but instead bring the KX-3 as the fixed radio in the holiday bungalow and the TX-500 as a radio I would travel around to SOTA-summits and IOTA islands. I would not say they compete with each other, but they are super complements, the KX-3 and the TX-500. If I did not own a KX-3, I am almost sure I would not have invested the money in such a rig, if the TX-500 was my first portable rig. Lab599 has really created a super radio, well worth waiting for, in COVID times. I know the demand has been really high for this radio, so guys, be patient and wait for it. You will not regret it!
